A HISTORY OF BROOKHAVEN NORTH

Not unlike many other communities, the city of Edmond was, until the mid-to late sixties, little more than a sleepy little college town without much prospect of ever becoming what it is today. Although a bit sluggish in its early growth state, the home buying market in much of what is now north Edmond opened into full bloom, and with it came the Brookhaven Addition.

In the 1950’s, Dallas and Jane Nay purchased 160 acres within which the boundaries of Brookhaven were eventually established. The Nay family resided in a traditional brick farmhouse that still exists just south of Covell and west of Bryant (located on the east side of what is now the Birnam Woods housing addition). To the west and a bit south (near what is now Olde Towne) lay a large pond. And to the north, you would find a peach and apple orchard, followed further north by farm and grazing land. The Nay’s had a sizeable garden just east of where Brookhaven Park is now located.

As Edmond grew north, the Nay’s sold their first 40 acres to developers Clifford Shahan, Bob Geis and Joe Geis in 1976. The deal included a purchase option on additional 80 acres over the next three years. The option was exercised within two years.

Brookhaven was developed in three sections or Plats, commencing with Plat 1 at what is now the east entrance off Bryant, working west to Plat 2, and north to Plat 3. Development drew many builders, including Bob and Joe Geis, Charles Muse, Leo Flaherty, Tucker Homes, Mike McKay Homes, Don Walters Homes, Bob Forrester, and Bill Beneer. Sales prices ranged from $70,000 to more than $100,000.

While the developer had intended to name the streets under construction after his daughters, Mrs. Nay convinced him that names containing the word ‘brook’ might be more attractive, whereupon authority was granted to her to choose names she considered attractive and appropriate. Every street except one contains the word ‘brook’ in its name – Nay Avenue, the street that connects Brookhaven to the Birnam Woods addition is the lone exception.

Brookhaven has always been a desirable addition in which to purchase and establish a home.  The Brookhaven Homeowners Association of Edmond, Inc. was formed July 11, 1984.  In 2011, the owners in Brookhaven voted to implement mandatory covenants in Plat 1. Since then, other owners in Plats 2 and 3 have opted to declare their lots subject to these mandatory covenants.

Since its inception, the Brookhaven Homeowner’s Association of Edmond, Inc. (Brookhaven HOA) has stayed busy! All Brookhaven HOA Board Members and Officers volunteer their time to serve the Brookhaven neighborhood. With the money received in annual dues, a portion of the money is placed in a reserve fund. The reserve funds are used for capital improvements, such as providing cost share with homeowners in replacing the perimeter fences along Bryant and Covell Avenue, updating the appearance of the entrances with electric lights and new landscape materials, and future projects. The remaining dues portion pays for maintenance costs to mow the frontages and maintain the flower beds at the entrances to the Brookhaven addition. The Brookhaven HOA has also instituted annual events such as spring and fall events in the Brookhaven Park, the neighborhood garage sale and the Christmas lighting contest.
